I joined the prison service in 1976 going to HMP Holloway for my initial four weeks of training. Whilst there I had to attend HMP Pentonville for my fitness training as Holloway didn’t have a gym and it was there that I learnt about the role of the P. E. Instructor.
Being very fit at this time in my life I decided that I would like to pursue this area of the prison service. Following my Officer training at Aberford Road, Wakefield, I was posted to HMP Moor Court Womens’ open prison in Staffordshire, where I was one of only a handful of ‘Established’ officers.
Following my probationary period, I turned down the opportunity to be temporarily promoted to Senior Officer as I wanted to undertake the PE course.
Having successfully completed the PE course in 1979 I was posted to HMRC Risley in Warrington and subsequently moved to HMP Styal Women's’ prison in 1983, where I gained promotion to P.E. Senior Officer. During my time at Styal, I regularly assisted on the Local and National C&R training courses.
I gained promotion to P. E. Principal Officer in 1991 and moved to Newbold Revel (New Officer training) but following a skiing accident, I left the PE department and went into general staff training.
In 1999 I transferred to HMYOI Thorn Cross, near Warrington, and later joined the Standards Audit Team, where I stayed until I gained promotion to G5 (Manager F) and was posted in 2004 to HMP Leicester then moving to HMP Wellingborough in January 2009.
I retired in July 2009 and proceeded to spend four and a half months running the small prison in (The British Overseas Territory) St Helena, where I returned the following year for another five and a half month tour of duty.
Having now fully retired I love to pursue my passion for travelling the world, combined with birdwatching, walking, pilates, yoga and going to the gym and travelling overseas in winter to follow the England Cricket team.
